Nicole Kidman Biography
They were Hollywood's golden couple. Nicole Kidman played a young doctor who falls for a racing driver played by Tom Cruise, in the film "Days of Thunder" in 1990 and that was the start of one of the greatest love stories in the movie industry.
It was the Australian actress's US debut in the highest grossing film of the year and after a passionate romance on the set the couple married on Christmas Eve 1990 in Telluride Colorado.
As husband and wife they teamed up again in Ron Howard's Irish epic "Home and Away" which received rave reviews.
Early in their marriage Kidman suffered an ectopic pregnancy and they adopted a daughter Isabella Jane (born 1992) and three years later they adopted a son Connor Anthony (born 1995).
Cruise is a follower of Scientology and Kidman although she is a practising Roman Catholic occasionally joined her husband and supported scientology during her marriage.
Just after their 10th anniversary shock waves reverberated round Hollywood when the couple separated and Cruise filed for divorce in February 2001 citing "irreconcilable differences." Neither of them has ever made public the reason for the marriage break up.
Kidman was three months pregnant at the time and suffered a miscarriage. In an interview she gave in 2006 she said she still loved Cruise. "He was huge" she said. "He still is. To me he was just Tom, but to everyone else he was huge. But he was lovely to me and I loved him, I still loved him and I was so shocked by the divorce."
When she made the film "Cold Mountain" there were rumours that she had an affair with co-star Jude Law and that was responsible for the break-up of her marriage. Both of them stringently denied this and she sued the British tabloids which published the story. She won an undisclosed sum which she gave to a Romanian orphanage where the movie was filmed.
Kidman met her second husband, country singer Keith Urban at G'Day Los Angeles an event honouring Australians in January 2005 and they married on June 25th 2006 at Cardinal Cerretti Memorial Chapel in the grounds of St Patrick's Estate, Manly in Sydney.
The couple have homes in Sydney, Sutton Forest, Los Angeles and Nashville Tennessee. In March 2008 they bought another house in Los Angeles and in Nashville within days.
Away from the screen she loves sky diving but she is forbidden to do it while she is shooting a film. In 2005 she won interim restraining orders against two Sydney paparazzi who were stalking her.
In 2002 she won an Academy Award as Best Actress for her role in "The Hours" a BAFTA and a Golden Globe Award.
Four years later she was made a Companion of the Order of Australia, the highest civilian Order the country can award. The same year she became a Goodwill Ambassador for UNIFEM, the United Development Fund for Women.
