Lady Gaga Biography
She is known for her outrageous outfits, but the one she wore at MTV's Video Music Awards in Los Angeles on November 12th was the most outrageous of them all.
When Lady Gaga came on stage to collect the first of her eight awards that night, she was dressed head-to-toe in fresh meat. Her hat, dress and boots were made of various cuts and it outraged animal rights campaigners who said it was thoroughly offensive.
She defended her decision to wear it saying, "It was not disrespectful towards vegetarians and vegans" and she has since confirmed that her outfit actually was made of raw meat.
Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March 28th 1986 she is the eldest child of internet entrepreneur Joseph Germanotta and his wife Cynthia. She learned the piano at the age of 4-years-old and wrote her first piano ballad at the age of 13.
At the age of 14 she began performing at Open Mike Nights and it was obvious to her family where her future career lay. She managed to get early admission to New York University's Tisch School of Arts at the age of 17 and she lived in a university dormitory on 11th Street.
She studied music and improved her writing skills by composing essays and analytical papers focusing on topics such as art, religion, social issues and politics.
In the middle of her 2nd semester she decided to quit university to concentrate on her musical career. Her father agreed to pay her rent for a year, provided she promised to go back to re-enrol if she was unsuccessful.
It was this decision which would change the young singer's life forever and cause an estrangement with her father who had always supported her.
She said, "I left my entire family, got the cheapest apartment I could find and ate shit until somebody would listen."
Shortly after she left university she signed with Def Jam Records, but they dropped her after just three months. She was then introduced to songwriter and producer Red One and the first song produced with them was "Boys, Boys, Boys".
She moved to an apartment on Lower East Side and she started the Stefani Germanotta Band, with friends from university. They recorded an EP of their ballads at a studio below a liquor store in New Jersey and they became a local fixture at on the downtown club scene.
It was at this period in her life she began performing at New Burlesque shows and also experimenting with drugs, which caused the rift with her father. He did not understand why she had to touch the banned substances and he could not even look at her for several months.
It was music producer Rob Fusari who was responsible for her unusual name. He helped her to write some of her early songs and he compared her vocal harmonies to those of Freddie Mercury from Queen. He nicknamed her Gaga and when she came into the office, instead of saying "Good Morning," she would sing "Radio Ga Ga".
She was trying to find a stage name when she received a text message from Fusari addressed to Lady Gaga and the name stuck. Fusari, who later became her boyfriend, said the message was actually a mistake as he had sent it to "Radio Ga Ga" but it had automatically corrected itself to read, "Lady Gaga".
Performing artist Lady Starlight helped her to create her famous on stage fashions and the two began performing together in downtown venues.
Lady Gaga has openly admitted she is bisexual and her song "Poker Face" was written about her bisexuality. She has said her boyfriends were intimidated by the fact she went with both men and women, as it made them feel uncomfortable. She is currently re-united with her boyfriend she dated 5 years ago, barman Luc Carl and he joined her in November 2010 in Vienna for part of her Monster Ball European Tour.
