Karen Gillan Biography
How many young actresses have a medal created of their image but none other than the Royal Mint. But that is exactly what has happened to actress Karen Gillan.
In early 2009 Gillan was cast as the 11th Doctor Who's companion Amy Pond and the Royal Mint have added an Amy Pond Medal to their official set of five collectables to mark Series 5. The others are a Dalek, a weeping angel and a smiler, plus the newest Doctor Matt Smith.
Smith has described her as "the sexiest companion ever but has said she is as mad as a box of cats" while she says "I was absolutely over the moon at being chosen to play the Doctor's new companion, the show is a massive phenomenon and Matt Smith is an incredible actor. It is such fun to act alongside him."
Auditioning for the part was planned like a military operation and she felt like a secret spy infiltrating the enemy.
"I wasn't allowed to tell anyone what I was auditioning for, not even the people on the reception desk where the auditions were taking place," she said. "I had to give them a code name Panic Moon which is actually an anagram of Companion so it was all very clever."
The first person to hear her audition was successful was her boyfriend photographer Patrick Green. He was with her when she was told and she said there was a lot of screaming.
Amy is more feisty than all the Doctor's previous companions. She doesn't take his word as gospel and is always happy to challenge him. If he tells her to do something she doesn't necessarily do it and that can cause a rift between them. But there are also some very hot and steamy snogging scenes as they are both very passionate people.
Gillan says Green is "cool" about the scenes and the couple are very comfortable together. He is passionate about bonsai trees and they often visit a nursery which specialises in them so she can buy him some as a present.
Karen Gillan was born in Inverness and was 16-years-old when she decided to pursue her interest in acting. After studying at Edinburgh's Telford College she went on to the Italia Conti Academy of Dramatic Art in London on their BA (Hons) acting course.
A few months after enrolling she was offered a part in one episode of the Scottish detective series "Rebus" with Robbie Coltrane. This caused her a dilemma as she was undecided whether to accept as it meant leaving the Academy for just one episode, or stay on for another three years and get her degree.
Desperate to return to acting she randomly left, did the episode and then worked in a London pub to make ends meet.
She started working as a model doing a number of modelling jobs and was at the launch party for "Dainty Doll" the make-up range started by Nicola Roberts from "Girls Aloud" for girls with red hair and a pale skin.
In the show each model took on a role and she was "Premiere Girl" a red carpet strutting glamour girl.
Scottish actress Karen Gillan shot to fame when she was cast as the new Dr Who's sidekick, Amy Pond. The show was attracting a lot of media attention because 27-year-old Matt Smith was chosen to succeed David Tennant, making him the youngest Doctor ever.
She was born on 28th November 1987 in Inverness to Marie and John Raymond, who was the manager of a day centre. She developed her love of acting at school and at 16 she decided she wanted to make it her career.
She admits she never watched "Dr Who" before she was selected from thousands of actresses to play the eighth Doctor's companion. Her character is very raunchy, which is what she likes about the role.
She made her debut in the episode "Eleventh Hour" which was first shown on April 13th 2010 and the cast have filmed a Christmas Special which features guest stars Katherine Jenkins and actor Sir Michael Gambon.
The new Doctor and his companion have been a tremendous success and she has been signed up for the 2011 series. At one screening of the show in New York people camped out overnight in order to get a seat.
In May 2011 Gillan will make her big screen debut when she starts filming a $7 million film "Romeo and Brittney" written and directed by David Baddiel. She all stared in the comedy show "The Kevin Bishop Show" on Channel 4 and on its online player 4oD.
Karen Gillan stars as Brittney a New Jersey high school student who is sent back to 13th Century Verona where she finds the people in her life are characters from Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet." Her mother will be played by X-Files star Gillian Anderson and Robert Sheehan from "The Misfits" is playing a "nerdy" reject who is transformed into her Romeo.
