Jennifer Lopez - Biography
J Lo as she is popularly known was born and grew up in Castle Hill, a neighbourhood in the Bronx, New York.
Her parents are Puerto Rican and she was raised as a Roman Catholic attending catholic schools throughout her education and from the age of 19 she financed herself through singing and dancing lessons.
After spending one semester at Baruch College she divided her time between working as a notary public in a legal office, dance classes and performing in Manhattan night clubs.
She had a small part in the 1987 film "My Little Girl," and after months of auditioning for dance roles she was selected as a dancer for various rap music videos, a 1990 episode of Yo!, MTV Raps and as a back-up dancer for New Kids on the Block.
Her first regular high-profile job was as a Fly Girl dancer on the TV comedy programme "In Living Color" from 1991-1993. Soon afterwards she became a backing dancer for Janet Jackson and she appeared in her 1993 video "That's The Way Love Goes."
She subsequently ventured into acting and gained recognition in the 1995 action thriller "Money Train."
Her first leading role was in the biographical film "Selena" in 1997 which won her an ALMA Award for Outstanding Actress. She won a 2nd ALMA in 1998 for her performance in "Out of Sight." She went on to star in various films including "The Wedding Planner" in 2001.
Her debut album "On the 6," a reference to the 6 subway line she used to take when growing up in Castle Hill, was released on June 1st 1999 and reached the Top 10 of the Billboard 200.
The album featured the Billboard Hot 100 number 1 lead single "If you had my love" as well as the top 10 hit "Waiting for Tonight."
It also featured a Spanish language Latin-flavoured duet "No Me Ames" with Marc Anthony, who later became her husband.
Her records have earned her many Grammy Award nominations, 3 American Music Awards and a member of the Judging Panel of the American reality talent show "American Idol."
In February 2007 she led People en Espanol's list of the 100 Most Influential Hispanics and she has endorsed various perfumes as well as having her own clothing line.
She is an avid supporter of the Children's Hospital in Los Angeles and in September 2004 she was presented with the Children's Humanitarian Award at the hospital's Inaugural Noche de Ninos Galaz. She continues to attend the red carpet event and is a regular visitor to the hospital.
On February 14th 2007 Lopez received the Artists for Amnesty International Award in recognition of her work as producer and star of "Bordertown" a film exposing the ongoing murders of hundreds of women in the border city of Juarez, Mexico. She received the Award from Nobel Peace Prize winner Jose Ramos-Horta at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Lopez has had several high-profile relationships which attracted media attention. Her first marriage was to the Cuban-born Ojani Noa on February 22nd 1997. She met him when he worked as a waiter at a Miami restaurant. They divorced in January 1998 but she later employed him at her Pasadena Restaurant Madre's in April 2002. She fired him the following October and he sued her over the termination. They drew up a Confidentiality Agreement but in 2006 she had to sue him to prevent him writing a book about their short marriage. Over the next three years she repeatedly had to take him to court over his plans to sell the story of their marriage, either in the book or on film, winning an injunction each time.
Her second marriage was to her former back-up dancer Cris Judd who she met while filming her music video "Love Don't Cost a Thing." They were married on September 29th 2001 but it ended in June 2002 when Lopez publicly began dating Ben Affleck, and they were officially divorced in June 2003.
The media dubbed the couple "Bennifer" and in November 2002 they announced their engagement when Affleck gave her a 6-carat pink diamond ring worth a reputed $1.2 million.
The marriage was scheduled for September 14th 2003 but was called off just hours beforehand. Affleck said afterwards he no longer felt in control of his life, he felt suffocated and miserable and just had to get away, take a break and let things calm down. In January 2004 the couple announced their engagement was off.
Less than two months after their break-up Lopez started dating long-time friend Marc Anthony which whom she had worked on music videos. They had dated briefly before in the late 1990s before his first marriage and her 2nd.
In January 2004 he filed for divorce and they married at a quiet wedding on June 5th 2004, four days after his divorce was finalised.
On February 22nd 2008 Lopez gave birth to their twins, a boy and a girl, Emme Maribel Muniz and Maximilian "Max" David Muniz.
