Hailee Steinfeld Biography
She is the brand new star plucked from nowhere to play the most important role in the remake of the old John Wayne movie "True Grit".
So little was known about Hailee Steinfeld that people posed questions on the Internet, "Who is Hailee Steinfeld?"
What was known is that she was born on 11th December 1996 and she lives in Thousand Oaks, California where she attended Conejo Elementary and Colina Middle School, but she left towards the end of her first year and was home-schooled in 6th grade.
She had a number of small parts in teen-oriented films and television and did a KMart commercial for blingatude.
The Coen Brothers had gathered the nucleus of their cast for their 2010 adaptation of the western, but Paramount Pictures launched a nationwide search for an actress to play Mattie Ross.
The original book is told through the eyes of Mattie and the fiercely stubborn and funny character is pivotal to the plot. She sets out to avenge her father's murder in cold blood, and bullies and enlists the support of the Marshal to capture the killer who is still at large.
15,000 virtually unknown girls auditioned for the part and Steinfeld decided to take a chance by turning up in costume and telling Joel and Ethan Coen what her vision of the character was.
She and her mother went to a fabric shop and bought some corduroy material which her mother made into a skirt. Steinfeld wore it with boots and a ruffled 1800s looking shirt bought at a charity shop.
When she heard she had got the part she said she felt like she had won the lottery. "It feels like that one-in-a-million kind of opportunity" she said "I assumed I would be doing a few shorts and work my way up, but instead I've gone from A-Z."
Despite being the teenager everyone is talking about, Steinfeld has kept her feet firmly on the ground. Her horse is her best friend, and at the end of the day's shooting she would go home and text or video-chat to her friends.
Steinfeld is as feisty as the character she plays in "True Grit." Whilst working on the film she set up a swear jar and she asked co-stars Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon and Josh Brolin, plus all the other actors and crew, to put in $5 every time they used the "F" word and $1 for the rest. At the end of shooting they had raised $300 for charity.
Four days after her 14th birthday she looked like a true star as she walked down the red carpet at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York for the film's premiere. She wore a Moschino sparkling silver dress, a pair of Christian Louboutin heels and carried a Judith Leiber clutch bag.
For someone no-one had ever heard of before, Hailee Steinfeld's future is now assured. She has signed with ICM who will represent her along with Coast-to-Coast Talent Group and Protege.
