Chelsea Handler Biography
Her jokes are risqué, her books raunchy, but it is all an act. She turned down an offer to pose nude in "Playboy" Magazine. They respected her wishes and she was featured in a non-nude pictorial in December 2009, as well as on the cover.
A former beauty pageant competitor she was also featured on the cover of "Shape" Magazine in April 2010. She also has her own column in "Cosmopolitan" Magazine and the UK Celebrity Magazine "Now".
She grew up in Livingston, New Jersey, the youngest of six children raised in Reform Judaism by her Mormon mother Sylvia and her Jewish father Melvin.
Her childhood was not happy as she felt an outsider in the "nice Jewish neighbourhood" she grew up in. She said everyone around her had Mercedes and Jaguars whilst she went to school in a Pinto.
At 19-years-old she moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, but an experience two years later made her change her mind and her life took a completely different direction.
She was asked to give a talk to a class of offenders and she told them a story about a DUI (drinking under influence) experience and they roared with laughter.
She discovered she could make people laugh very easily and decided to become a stand-up comic. No-one is safe from the butt of her jokes, she has made fun of film star Angelina Jolie since she "made-out" with her brother.
She has her own late-night talk show on television and Katie Price was publicly humiliated by Handler. Pitted against the American girl's sharp tongue, the British model who was relatively unknown in the United States at the time, was unable to say exactly what job she did. As she tried to keep up with Handler's wit she too was the butt of the presenter's jokes.
Her nickname is "The Sexy Handler" she has written three books which have been on the New York Times Best Seller List, two of them were number 1 in the non-fiction section.
Her first book was a memoir "My Horizontal Life - A Collection of One-Night Stands" describes a variety of sexual encounters she has gone through throughout her life. "Are You There Vodka? It's Me Chelsea" is a collection of humorous essays and had a print run of over 350,000.
Her third book "Chelsea Chelsea Bang Bang" was released on March 9th 2010 and she went on a nationwide tour to promote it.
On November 15th 2010 Handler's publishers gave her own publishing imprint, Borderline Amazing/A Chelsea Handler Book, and she has signed a three-book deal with the imprint. The first of which is "Lies Chelsea Handler Told Me" is due out in May 2011.
On 2007 she performed an hour-long stand-up comedy tour across the United States and the same year she appeared in the internet-based programme "In the Motherhood" with Leah Remini and Jenny McCarthy, who joined the programme in January 2008. It was a comedy series about mothers, by mothers, for mothers.
In January 2010 she announced on television she had broken up with her boyfriend of four years, Ted Harbert Chief Executive Officer of Comcast Entertainment. The following month, again on television, she confirmed she was dating "Animal Planet" star, animal handler, print model and TV producer David Salmoni.
